5:15-7:15pm
Bates Wilder
$225.00
----------
STARTING ON JULY 26
Through a series of structured exercises devised to work with and develop an actor's skills in the areas of imagination, listening, concentration, focus, and response - you will begin to learn this ability. Acting is a craft, and learning the components of an acting technique take time and practice! You are on your feet in every class, participating in each exercise - developing confidence and developing an understanding of the Basics of Acting.
Led by Bates Wilder an actor who has been seen locally on the stage and nationally in film, commercials, and television. His stage credits include: Blackbird (SpeakEasy Stage); and A Streetcar Named Desire, Waiting for Godot, and Frozen (New Rep). He performed the title role in Killer Joe (W.H.A.T.) and Nick Rosetti in the Record-breaking 30 plus year running of Shear Madness (Charles Playhouse), where he is currently the Production Stage Manager. Bates played the role of Jimmy in Showtime’s Brotherhood for three seasons and can be seen in small roles in films shot locally including: Shutter Island, Mystic River, and Maiden Heist. Bates teaches acting for directors as an adjunct at Boston University and as an independent contractor at Emerson.
"I tell my students, I can't teach you to become a star," he says. "But I can help you pursue your passion. And that's it. It's all about passion. I love what I do." - Bates Wilder
Here's an excerpt from a recent review of "Opus" that Bates performed in last month:
"…it’s Bates Wilder, perhaps, who turns in the strongest among these strong performances. He doesn’t let us read much into Carl at first; we simply see a big guy with a shaved head who just wants to play. As events unfold, however, Carl unfolds himself to us as well, so that by the end he’s become the surprising but inevitable center of the play. Wilder modulates each shift and revelation with a lovely delicacy."
Bates will co-star in SpeakEasy Stage Company's "In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)" in September!

1 Saturday, 10:00am-4:00pm
Josh Chenard
$99.00
----------
ON AUGUST 7
Come and experience the Michael Chekhov Technique with Certified Chekhov Technique Instructor Josh Chenard. Referred to by Constantin Stanislavski as “My most brilliant pupil,” Michael Chekhov’s approach to acting is founded in an understanding of the artist as a whole being whose thoughts, feelings, desires, voice, and physical body are intimately interwoven. The Michael Chekhov technique trains these aspects jointly while encouraging the actor to fully explore and utilize his or her unlimited, rich, and fertile imagination. Utilized by actors such as Marilyn Monroe, Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Depp, and Anthony Quinn, the Chekhov Technique is a valuable, dependable, and exciting technique to include in your acting “tool box”. Come and be inspired!
Here's what some former students had to say about this class:

Physical Comedy
1 Day Seminar
1 Saturday, 10:00am-2:00pm
Patrick Donnelly
$99.00
----------
ON AUGUST 14
Are you funny? The answer is yes!
What is funny? Comedy is the most challenging genre of performance, because the successes and failures are so immediate: the audience either laughs or it doesn't.
This class will explore proven physical exercises and hysterically stupid games to unleash your inner physical comedian. We will play with status, stillness, stealing and giving focus, vulnerability, and truth, using techniques from Clown, Improv, and Theater. You will appreciate the unique power of your stage presence, increase your ability to connect with an audience, and gain a deeper trust in your instincts, in a supportive class setting.
This class is for actors, acrobats, dancers, and other experienced performers (inspired amateurs welcome). This training is extremely useful for act creation and auditioning, and for understanding the power of humor even in “serious” performance. Minimum physical ability required (you should be comfortable with standing and moving around the studio; expertise in acrobatics not required). For adults (18-up)
BYOS (bring your own stupid) and a willingness to play.

Tom recalls working with Clint Eastwood: "“Clint doesn’t say ‘Action’ or ‘Cut.’ He’ll say ‘Okay’ or ‘All right,’” Kemp explained. “My first day on the set, I had a few lines. Kevin Bacon and Laurence Fishburne walk up to the car and talk to some of the cops, I meet them, we walk and talk as we approach the car. We do it once and Clint says, ‘I’ve changed a couple of tiny things. I’ve changed the framing, I’ve changed when the conversation comes in.’ And he changed the side from which I came in. He was composing the shot without changing the performances. The scene ends with Laurence and I on one side of the car and Kevin on the other. And Clint says, ‘All right, let’s move on.’ And Fishburne turns to me and says, ‘What the hell just happened?’ He’d just flown in from Australia where he’d just spent two years doing the MATRIX movies where he said they’d have 36 takes before lunch. Then they’d come back from lunch and do it again. You realize that if Eastwood’s got it; he’s got it and he just moves on. Usually it’s about two takes.”
